http://miljons.com/ is a website devoted to funny and often ridiculous real-life images and stories from the wonderful country of Latvia. In English the website's full title is "1 Million Reasons Why Latvia Is The Best Country In The World", obviously with a fair share of sarcasm.
It's another Tuesday night and I decided to kill some time before sleep. I went to the above-mentioned website, which usually makes me laugh like a pig, and stumbled upon this image (http://miljons.com/lv/7847/ ). Being half-Latvian, half-Russian/Polish, at first the image made me confused and a little bit annoyed. An old Soviet veteran is pictured with the new Riga's catch phrase "Easy to come, hard to leave". I, for one, am the biggest Latvian lover I know (I won't use the word "patriot", although everyone in my family calls me that) and I try to be informed about the country, even though I am miles away at the moment. I am in no way connected to Russia. Been there once when I was 4. Don't remember anything. I, however, grew up in a house where Russian television was available as much as any old Latvian channel. I went to a middle school that was initially for Russian-speakers (it was the closest school to my house; really good reason, eh?), but unlike most of my peers I spent hours listening to Latvian music, reading about Latvian culture and history in Latvian, reading Latvian press. I remember my peers making fun of my lack of accent when we had to read stuff out loud in Latvian, or how "funny" the word combination "Prāta Vētra" sounded when I happily talked about the band, or how I was one of the few who aced the national anthem singing quiz (one of the most proud and definitely embarrassing moments of my school life). I was always aware of the negativity surrounding either side of the spectrum and thought it was absurd that the people of two great nationalities can't live together in peace. I will probably continue writing about this later on, but if you are able to read in Latvian, it is interesting to flip through the comments to the picture. A debate was sparked by a few members of the website which has a lot of good points from either side. I feel blessed to be born in such a great country, and I hope that one day the majority of those who live in Latvia will realize that friendship is the way to go. History was harsh, but it was there for a reason (an unfair reason, for sure) - to TEACH people how to survive without conflicts. I feel like I should do more research and write something more coherent on the topic, but for now I will stop.

peace&love, s. |

How much do I wish I could see Peter Bjorn and John play "Needles and Pins" LIVE?? Ugh. It's disgustingly unfair that they decided to skip our state on their BIRTHDAY TOUR. Come back, my favorite Swedes. I am not done with you yet. Keep tweeting random hilarious stuff and I'll only love you more.

Another one of my Brainstorm-related posts. This time about the lyrics "contest". I don't really want to call it a contest because it is all about art and them being able to sing the words on and off stage with the most sincerity. I'm pretty sure mine didn't fit at all, haha, but hopefully they could use at least a line in the song. That would make my life! :D It was my first attempt at writing words for a song, so I am not expecting mine to make any sense.. Even when I write poetry, often times I have to read it out loud to the professors because I envision a completely different rhythm than others. Maybe I just suck at writing anything that rhymes. haha.
All in all, I'm just glad that my favorite band is reaching out to their followers and is using all the social networking sites to keep in touch. Good luck to them! Lai veicas ;)
